Arranged and Produced by Kerry Moffit

KERRY MOFFIT has been a professional musician for 41 years, performing regularly around the country and around Europe. He has performed with and written arrangements for all types of groups, from large jazz orchestras to small ensembles, and he has appeared on over 70 recordings as a sideman. Moffit has accomplished much over his long career, but he has never released a project under his name until now. WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND, Moffit’s debut CD as a leader with his band, Turning Circles, is an impressive showcase for this brilliant trumpeter’s performance and compositional talents.

Moffit has a good reason for not putting out his own project. He served as a proud member of the United States Air Force Bands for nearly 25 years. The Air Force Bands are among the premier musical organizations in the country. Moffit enlisted in 1991, and throughout his service, he played trumpet in concert bands, ceremonial bands, jazz ensembles, and pop/rock bands for both military and civilian audiences.

WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND features four jazz standards and four original tunes penned by Moffit, who also arranged all the music. The album is a stellar debut for an artist who has had an amazing career despite the fact he is unknown to general jazz audiences. Moffit is at the top of his form as a musician and composer. His warm trumpet tone and hip phrasing pare beautifully with his sophisticated compositions. Like a fine wine that has had time to age, his music is intricate, full of vibrant colors, and eminently pleasing to the palate.

Some excellent stuff from Moffit… As good as the original tracks are, it is the original material that really makes this album worth checking out. Each of the players gets a chance to shine here, and the tracks are never dull for even a moment… lively and enjoyable!

-Music Log by Michael Doherty

Moffit is a straight-ahead player with a flair for sophisticated compositions, beautifully warm tone, and a contemporary edge to phrasing. Moffit’s auspicious debut clearly shows his veteran command of all three elements – composing, arranging, and playing. This is first rate straight-ahead jazz, impeccably rendered and worth many listens.

-Making a Scene by Jim Hynes

Kerry has been featured on over 70 albums as a sideman and was also a member of the US Air Force Band for nearly 25 years. Now with his own band, Turning Circles, behind him, Kerry lets his talents fly on this new eight-track release. The album introduces you to Kerry’s stellar work on the trumpet with the upbeat, opening number “This I Dig Of You.” He keeps the energy flowing with “Free For All,” which allows his bandmates to showcase their stuff.

-JP’s Music Blog by James Pasinski

Out of uniform, Moffit sounds like a guy on weekend leave, tearing into his off-the-base solos as though he’s been waiting to play this way for decades. Similarly, the charts inspired by arrangers such as Neal Hefti and Sammy Nestico fly by like a brisk walk down the hallway practice rooms at North Texas State circa 1985… the most effective moment comes at the end, a tender duet between Moffit and Arlene Pritchard McDaniel’s Rhodes piano on “But Beautiful” that sighs with bittersweet regret.

-Roll Call by John Chacona

As wonderful as those standards are, the Moffit originals are truly remarkable. Yeah, we had to wait too long for this album. With all those years spent in the Air Force Band, Kerry Moffit was honing his craft so that, when he was ready, he could release an album that we longed to hear. Maybe we had to be ready to hear him.

-The Jazz Owl by Travis Rogers, Jr.

Now he’s on his own and letting the rest of us enjoy what he does. Rounding up some pals that know what to do, this is solid, straight-ahead jazz in which leader Kerry Moffit writes most of them as well. Well done.

-Midwest Record by Chris Spector

Kerry Moffit has had an incredible career, despite being a stranger to jazz fans. His sophisticated compositions are up there with the best and he is a brilliant trumpeter with warm phrasing.

-La Habitacion del Jazz (The Jazz Room) by Jose Ramon

Moffit could be described as the greatest modern jazz trumpet player you never heard – until now that is. Keep him in mind when the DownBeat Polls come around. I find it nothing less than wonderful that musicians of this calibre are still breathing new life into such a tried and tested format – it is a credit to both themselves and their predecessors.

-Bebop Spoken Here (UK) by Lance Liddle

One of the best debut albums I’ve heard (yet) this year. Kerry’s horn is the essence of “fluid” and will capture your ears immediately! Kerry’s up-front horn playing on Hank Mobley’s “This I Dig Of You” made it an instant favorite for me… The ultra-swingin’ intro to Kerry’s original, “Free For All” set the pace for a totally enthralling 8:21 full of swirling & whirling creativity… it’s “full of fresh” and definitely in “movement mode”… one of the best jazz originals I’ve listened to (yet) in 2021.

– Contemporary Fusion Reviews by Dick Metcalf

Moffit is a superbly inventive player with a terrific sound and great command. Improvisationally, he stylistically straddles classic bop lines with appealing modern ideas. A superb presentation of jazz classics and originals — from a compositional standpoint, he has vision, emotional depth, and taste. Turning Circles is an upbeat, swinging and all-around fine side. There are no squares or curds here. Mr. Moffit has found his way to offer a super-spinning wheel.
